Rod Reid (Director and Principal Consultant of EMA Consulting) presented an informative discussion on the three forms of harassment – sexual, racial and bullying – to a group of HR practitioners. With the cost to the Australian Workplace estimated to be above $11 billion, the impact of workplace harassment is significant and growing each year.
It is critical that employers understand their obligations around providing a safe workplace for their employees, and HR must ensure they have ‘Reasonable Steps’ in place for managing workplace harassment:
- Have clear policies to deal with the issue at hand
- Educate all relevant personnel to ensure understanding
- Manage all non-compliance issues accordingly
